Gee & Company of Birmingham are delighted to announce the award of a framework for Chemical dosing systems for United Utilities. The award is for a period of 5 years, and contains a discretionary extension up to 7 years. This framework covers both chemical dosing skids themselves, and packaged chemical dosing systems, built at Gee’s 6 acre Birmingham design & manufacturing facility.
The process was initiated, post to a UU review of the quality of chemical dosing installed asset base from AMP 5. This resulted in UU approved strategy of a move towards fixed standard configurations, consisting of 3 types of dosing rigs, and 3 tank sizes, for all new chemical dosing equipment. This in turn was aligned to Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA) that also meet or exceed the UU asset and engineering standards. Ultimately the project specific requirements can call from the most appropriate dosing rig or packaged plant size, to ensure the continuity of standardisation and build quality, across all UU water & wastewater sites.
This procurement process took a great deal of time and effort on the part of both parties. The UU team comprising of Procurement, Mechanical, Electrical and Maintenance representatives, adopted a standard based design layout, after consideration of historic good practise, including the Sodium Hydroxide dosing skids Gee originally supplied at UU’s Sweetloves WTW. To ensure due diligence within this procurement process, UU undertook bidder workshop site visits, whereby Gee’s were required to build a range of replica dosing skids, to the signature design standard & specifications, thus enabling the UU team to audit adherence & build quality.
Matt Walker a Senior Buyer at UU said ”It is essential that standardised chemical dosing systems are selected, to drive optimum performance with lowest whole life cost, to achieve the key business needs of operability, affordability, and being technically acceptable. This, aligned with enabling UU to maintain the equipment in a safe and reliable condition, allows UU to maintain it’s reputation as one of the UK’s leading Water & Wastewater companies”.
This procurement process for chemical dosing equipment proved a success, and has since evoked the beginning of discussions on design improvements at a subsequent working group, to which
Package Plant solution (Gee Sodium Hypochlorite Dosing Skid) expedites chlorine replacement project at Power Station
Gee & co supplied a Package Plant solution in short order to allow an operating power
station to replace its outdated chlorine dosing system without compromising efficiency.
The hyperbolic cooling tower water at a major coal power-fired power station had traditionally been treated with gaseous chlorine prior to recirculation. When the time came for this system to be updated it was decided to move to a safer, gasless system which would instead dose liquid sodium hypochlorite. This was known to be far more cost effective than upgrading the current chlorine gas system, far safer due to the nature of the chemicals
Gee electroplating and industrial effluent treatment processes have a world wide reputation which has built on a foundation of Gee’s in-house process knowledge and production excellence.
